The unexpected characters in Sergis’ work antagonize with the artist himself, for a plane of coexistence within the canvas frame, as well as, volumetric substantiation in an image that has absolved its sense of spatial depth. The world portrayed by Sergis is not a hospitable environment for its dwelling bodies, hence their organic deconstruction becomes a governing rule for their representational endurance. Visually vulnerable, they risk instant assimilation by the monochromatic surroundings, as they linger in a state of constant transformation. For the viewer, such creatures are mostly formed as a by-product of external forces, rather than the materialization of their interior characteristics. A situation and survival condition, parallel to the effort of contemporary artists to appropriate space for artistic existence in the traditional and single-dimensional cultural Cypriot landscape.
